Reading Curriculum K-3:
Our K-3 library curriculum supports the development of attitudes, habits, and skills that lead to effective use of library resources and a lifelong practice of reading for pleasure. The topics covered include:
- Searching, selecting, locating, and checking out library books
- Choosing a “just right” book that is neither too easy nor too difficult
- Parts/features of a book and how to care for a book
- Different kinds of books and purpose for reading (stories, information, picture, chapter, etc.)
- How books are made and the different jobs involved in their creation.
The library curriculum also includes the development of skills for inquiry learning, such as:
- Finding resources on a topic or to answer a question, including student-generated topics and questions
- Reading for information: recording, summarizing, and synthesizing information
