Reading Curriculum K-3:

Our K-3 library curriculum supports the development of attitudes, habits, and skills that lead to effective use of library resources and a lifelong practice of reading for pleasure. The topics covered include:

  • Searching, selecting, locating, and checking out library books
  • Choosing a “just right” book that is neither too easy nor too difficult
  • Parts/features of a book and how to care for a book
  • Different kinds of books and purpose for reading (stories, information, picture, chapter, etc.)
  • How books are made and the different jobs involved in their creation.

The library curriculum also includes the development of skills for inquiry learning, such as:

  • Finding resources on a topic or to answer a question, including student-generated topics and questions
  • Reading for information: recording, summarizing, and synthesizing information
